ASL Starter Kit Haul & Tanktoberfest Community Poll

Advanced Squad Leader has a reputation for being the deep end of the tactical pool — but the Starter Kit line is the ladder that lets you wade in. In this one I go through a fresh ASL Starter Kit haul from MMP, top to bottom, and put a Tanktoberfest question to the community.

The whole Starter Kit line — plus Decision at Elst

The haul covers the full on-ramp: Starter Kit #1 (infantry), #2 (guns and artillery), #3 (armor and tanks), and #4 (the Pacific Theater), which together build the system up one layer at a time instead of dropping the full ASL rulebook on your head. The headliner is the brand-new historical module Decision at Elst, covering the 43rd Wessex Division and the Red Devils during Operation Market Garden — exactly the kind of armor-forward subject that fits Tanktoberfest. That’s where the community poll comes in: I want to know whether to put Decision at Elst on the table right away as part of the month’s content. If you’ve been curious about ASL but bounced off its reputation, the Starter Kits are genuinely the sane way in, and this haul is a good look at how the line scales from a single squad up to a full historical scenario. Cast your vote on the Community tab and let me know which way to go.

Vote in the poll, then subscribe so you’re there when Decision at Elst hits the table.

Fallschirmjäger: The Airborne Assault on Fortress Holland (MMP) — First Look

In May 1940 the Germans tried something no one had done at scale before: seizing a country’s bridges and airfields from the sky. Fallschirmjäger: The Airborne Assault on Fortress Holland covers that gamble, and MMP has brought it back as part of the Standard Combat Series. In this first look I unbox the reprint and go through what’s in it.

    SCS speed, airborne problems

Designed by Al Wambold on Dean Essig’s Standard Combat Series engine, this is a medium-complexity game with decent solitaire suitability — a genuinely approachable entry point into World War II tactical gaming. The box includes the version 1.8 SCS rules, the game-specific rules, 560 counters, and a 22″×34″ map, plus three scenarios: the introductory bridges at Noorderke and Dordrecht, the assault on Den Haag, and the full Fortress Holland campaign. The airborne angle is what makes it stand out — you’re landing scattered and light, and everything depends on how fast you can pull yourself together before the defenders do.

If the Standard Combat Series is your speed, there’s plenty more here. Subscribe to keep up.
